Where to Place Your Air Purifier
You've done the math, found the right CADR, and bought a high-quality unit. But if you tuck it behind a sofa or stick it in a dusty corner, you might be losing up to 50% of its effectiveness.
The Core Principle: Airflow
Air purifiers work by circulating all the air in a room through their filters. This requires a clear path for air to enter the intake and for clean air to exit the outlet. If airflow is restricted, the purifier will just clean the same small pocket of air over and over again, while the rest of the room stays stagnant.
The 360-Degree Rule
Many modern purifiers have 360-degree intakes. This means they pull air from all sides. To maximize this, you should keep the unit at least 12 to 18 inches away from any walls, curtains, or furniture. Placing a 360-degree unit directly against a wall effectively cuts its intake capacity by a significant margin.
Room-by-Room Placement Tips
In the Bedroom
The goal is to keep the "breathing zone" around your head as clean as possible. Place the unit 3–5 feet away from the head of the bed. Avoid placing it directly next to your nightstand if the fan noise or the breeze from the outlet bothers you. Most importantly, don't hide it under the bed or inside a closet.
In the Living Room
Living rooms are high-traffic areas. Place the unit in a central location, ideally near a doorway or a path where people naturally move. This takes advantage of natural air currents to help move air into the purifier's intake.
In the Kitchen
Keep the purifier at least 10 feet away from the stove. Vaporized grease can coat the filters and ruin them. Placing the unit in an adjacent dining area or on the far side of the kitchen island is usually the best strategy for neutralizing cooking odors.
In the Basement
Basements are often damp and dusty. Place the unit on a raised surface (like a table or shelf) if possible to avoid picking up the heaviest floor dust. Ensure it isn't tucked behind storage boxes where air cannot reach it.
Sized for Placement?
Remember that placement cannot fix an undersized unit. Use our calculator to ensure you have the right CADR for your room volume first.
Sizing Calculator →What Not To Do
- Don't hide it: Behind curtains, under furniture, or inside decorative enclosures.
- Avoid "Dead Zones": Corners and narrow alcoves have very little air movement.
- Keep away from electronics: Some purifiers can interfere with TV remotes or sensitive electronics if placed too close.
- Watch for drafts: If you place the unit directly under an HVAC vent, the vent's air pressure can actually push room air away from the purifier's intake.
FAQ
Is it better to put the purifier on the floor or a table?
For most large units, the floor is fine as they are designed to pull air from the bottom. For smaller units, placing them at "breathing height" (on a desk or nightstand) can be more effective for clearing the air you actually inhale.
Can I move my purifier from room to room?
Yes, but it's not ideal. Air purifiers work best when they run consistently. Moving a unit every few hours means the air in the "abandoned" room will quickly return to its baseline pollution level.
